Origin: China/ India

Description: Ginger is a perennial up to 1 m high, grown exclusively for the rhizome. Ginger originates from South Asia and is now grown in just about all tropical regions.

Ginger was probably one of the first spices to reach Europe from Asia. Originally, the iris-like plant comes from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Today ginger is grown just about everywhere in the tropics. In the Middle Ages ginger was used not only as a spice but also as a medicine. It was believed that ginger was an effective remedy against the "black death", the plague.

Ginger is mainly used in phytotherapy for digestive disorders. According to recent studies, ginger powder is also said to be particularly effective for motion sickness.

Extraction: Ginger oil is obtained by steam distillation.

Applications: Spray, bath, massage, ingestion.

Properties: Has a stimulating effect on the digestive and respiratory organs; blood purifying; fever reducer; analgesic; against rheumatism; aphrodisiac; against scurvy; antiseptic; good for the eyes; aromatic hydrolate (ginger water).
